In 1889, Conrad Schmitt founded the Conrad Schmitt Studios in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The son of German immigrant parents, Conrad had a passion for the ecclesiastical arts. He assembled a team of skilled artists and craftsmen whose reputation for excellence in stained glass and interior decoration quickly spread across the country. Upon his death in 1940, Conrad passed the successful business on to his three sons, who continued the tradition of quality craftsmanship until their own passing. In 1953, studio artist Bernard O. Gruenke purchased the studio and ran the business with his son Bernard E. Gruenke. Today, B. Gunar Gruenke and Heidi Gruenke Emery are the third generation of the Gruenke family to lead the studio, continuing a longstanding legacy of excellence in artistry.

This year, Conrad Schmitt Studios celebrates 130 years of providing stained glass, decorative painting and liturgical artwork for churches of all denominations throughout the country. The family-owned and operated firm is one of the oldest and largest glass studios in the United States. Over the years, they have provided award-winning art for basilicas, churches, cathedrals, theaters, hotels, courthouses, train stations, state capitols and other notable structures.

The studio is widely recognized for outstanding craftsmanship in the creation, conservation and restoration of stained glass and has been entrusted with numerous priceless commissions, including work by John LaFarge, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Mayer of Munich. Their national reputation for excellence stems from an unwavering commitment to providing the highest quality artistry and craftsmanship.

The firm is proud to be an Accredited Member in good standing with the Stained Glass Association of America (SGAA). The firm’s current owner and president, B.
